BURLINGTON — Des Moines County resident Jeff Poulter has announced his campaign for the Iowa House of Representatives in House District 95, which includes portions of Des Moines, Henry, Muscatine counties and all of Louisa County.
Poulter will run against Taylor Collins, who currently represents House District 95.
Poulter announced his run in the following letter:
Over my entire adult life, I have been in positions that served people, from spending 37-plus years with UPS where I worked as a package delivery driver serving the residents of Southeast Iowa, to completing my career in the role of corporate staff level manager assisting in the identification and development of future UPS leadership.
Prior to a work relocation, I served on the city council in my hometown of Lomax, Illinois and then was elected Village President. The past nine years I have been an active volunteer and served on the board of the Capitol Theater in Burlington and worked with a dedicated group in the success and growth of the theater for the community of Burlington.
After many discussions with family and friends made up of Republicans, Democrats and Independents that expressed disappointment in the representation and actions of representative Taylor Collins, I have made the decision to seek election to the Iowa House of Representatives.
Collins made a commitment to be a conservative voice for the residents of the 95th district and then supported extremist legislation that impacts Iowa public education. He voted to restrict the responsibilities of the Iowa State Auditor limiting his role in the fiscal checks and balances of the spending and allocation of Iowa dollars. Rep. Collins also voted to deny Iowa women their rights in determining their own reproductive freedoms all within his first legislative session.
I have always believed that elections are about providing voters with a choice. In 2022, the people of Iowa’s 95th House District were not provided that choice when Taylor Collins ran unopposed during that election cycle and then supported party leaderships extremist policies over the common-sense reasoning of the people of Southeast Iowa.
I refuse to allow Rep. Collins another free ride in 2024 to continue supporting party policy over the needs of voters of this district.
As a husband, father, and grandfather I pledge to represent the people of Iowa’s 95th House District in maintaining Iowa’s conservative fiscal spending and reduction in personal taxes, but to also support legislation for everyday Iowans that is not on the extreme to either the left or the right.
The people of Iowa supporting each other is what has made our state a great place to live and raise our families.
I commit to the residents of the 95th district to support our public schools, have the backs of state law enforcement and support farmers, small business owners and the entrepreneurs that support and invest in rural Iowa.
I am not a politician and I promise the voters that I have no intent of becoming a career politician. I will serve only as a voice and a responsible vote in the Iowa House for the people of the Iowa 95th District.
