WINFIELD — Over the weekend at Winfield Crooked Creek Days the JR Hewitt Memorial Car Show displayed community and patriotism as they raised scholarship funds for Winfield-Mt. Union students.
After some Crooked Creek Days attendees questioned the national anthem not playing before the parade Saturday morning, the JR Hewitt Memorial Car Show welcomed Brynn Pogmore to start the show with the patriotic song. As the music began everyone stopped what they were do, right where they were to stand and show respect.
With over 100 entries for the second time since 2020, the JR Hewitt Memorial Car Show attracted many to Winfield despite a very warm weekend. So, when all the motion stopped, it was decidedly noticeable.
At every JR Hewitt Memorial Car Show draws people and cars from all over in memory of its namesake and late organizer JR Hewitt. JR loved cars, and in his time running the show he grew it from only 23 entries to well over 100. Since his passing his family has continued the tradition and further memorialized the beloved Winfield resident by putting funds raised from a 50/50 raffle drawing to a scholarship fund for Winfield-Mt. Union students.
According to event organizers, the woman that won the 50/50 raffle knew JR Hewitt from his time doing dialysis. When she won she didn’t hesitate to give the money back to the scholarship fund in his name because “he always talked about giving back to the community.”
In total the 50/50 raffle added $1,680 to the JR Hewitt Memorial Scholarship Fund. Any senior at Winfield-Mt. Union can apply for this scholarship which began in 2019.
