MT. PLEASANT — Summer programming at the Library is a staple of summer vacation, and Henry County libraries are coming in hot with excellent events already.
This week the Mt. Pleasant Library has hosted Magician Makayla Oz and a STEM Challenge for an Egg Tower experiment.
141 children and adults attended Magician Makayla Oz’s performance.
“The children really loved it and were laughing because Makayla did some jokes and funny skits with her magic,” Mt. Pleasant Library Children’s Assistant Tia Scheitlin said.
HJ Nugen Library of New London Director Tayelor Donnolly arranged for kids to eat crickets on Tuesday thanks to the sponsorship of Brecht Auto Sales.
Gym-N-Eat Crickets from Ames had Cricket Farmer Shelby Smith zoom into HJ Nugen Library to talk about the benefits that come from adding crickets to your regular diet.
That’s right, not just trying them, but eating them consistently.
Children were invited to taste treats of Pancakes, brownies, and granola bars.
One of each set of these treats contained crickets and one was without.
The kids tested these to see if they could tell at the end and guess which ones had crickets in them.
Dry-roasted and seasoned crickets were also available to taste.
While they did not always guess correctly, they did appear to thoroughly enjoy the treats and crickets.
“Surprisingly a lot of them tried them and wanted more,” Assistant Library Director Brittney Lerner said. “It was absolutely wonderful. The kids loved it and just thought it was hilarious and they kept coming back for more. They really like eating crickets.”
Henry County Libraries have programming throughout the summer which the community is invited to attend.
