MT. PLEASANT — Concerned parents reached out to Lincoln Elementary School in Mt. Pleasant Thursday morning, Sept. 12, when whispers of a gun making it onto school grounds began to circulate. A letter released from the school district, however, clarified the situation.
“At approximately 8:05 a.m. this morning an unloaded firearm magazine (firearm ammunition storage) was found in the backpack of a Lincoln Elementary student,” a letter to Lincoln Elementary families stated. “The student was brought to the school office and the Mt. Pleasant CSD School Resource Officer was immediately notified.”
The letter, signed by Lincoln Elementary Principal Ashley Hoyer and MPSD Superintendent John Henriksen, further explained that the student found the magazine without their parents’ knowledge and took it from the family vehicle to “show friends, but ‘didn’t want to scare anyone.’”
The district is addressing the event according to school board policy 502.4 “Weapons on School Property.” According to the policy, any weapon or in this case, part of a weapon, will be confiscated from the student, parents will be notified, and the incident will be reported to authorities.
The policy states that students will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension or expulsion.
