MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant Main Street Art Center welcomes Kirsten Heerdt as their feature artist for the month of February.
As an active member of the Mt. Pleasant community since 1996 and a native from Colorado, Heerdt’s photography encompasses a large variety of beautiful places from the Rocky Mountains to scenes in sunny Florida to the fields right here in Henry County Iowa.
Her work also displays dramatic silhouettes and close-up photography.
Heerdt captured many of her Iowan landscape photographs in more recent years as she began to travel.
"I've been taking pictures for as long as I can remember," Heerdt said.
She finds passion and inspiration through her grandfather and parents’ photography.
Heerdt also boasts of a background in television reporting.
Since landing in Mt. Pleasant, Heerdt enjoyed positions as a Community Living Editor for the Mt. Pleasant News, a freelance reporter, and the editor to The Chaff, the Midwest Old Threshers quarterly publication.
Previously, Mt. Pleasant Arts IMPACT displayed Heerdt’s work at the IMPACT gallery in the Mt. Pleasant Public Library.
Additionally, Heerdt has worked with Arts IMPACT to organize the Colors of Summer Art Show that benefits the Friends of Henry County Health Center.
Through this work, local artists receive the opportunity to display their work in the Iowa Wesleyan University art gallery.
For Heerdt, the most rewarding thing is when the photos come together.
"The best part of taking photos is when everything comes together and what you saw in the viewfinder is what you see in the photo," she said
Mt. Pleasant Main Street Art Center will display Heerdt’s work for the remained of February.
All featured artists receive a reception at the art center; generally, the second Thursday of the month, and most of the work is available for purchase.
Other local artists place commission work in the front section of the art center for purchase throughout the year.
