Marching bands compete at 23rd Mt. Pleasant Invitational
Eleven schools traveled to Mt. Pleasant to compete, Saturday

MT. PLEASANT — Tipton, Oskaloosa, and Quincy schools took home first place in their division among eleven high school marching bands which assembled in Mt. Pleasant for the 23rd annual Marching Band Invitational, Saturday, Sept. 16.
Tipton started the competition off strong with strong as the first band following the Mt. Pleasant Middle School’s opening exhibition.
Under the direction of Andy Owen, the school performed a first-place worthy show with music from “Little Shop of Horrors.” They also snagged the award for Drumline and Horn line at the event.
Central Lee and Wapello took second and third place for the 1A/2A division. Central Lee high school also took home captions for Drum Majors and Color Guard.
The Division 3A title went to Oskaloosa’s Marching Indians after their performance in the final slot for their division along with captions for Color Guard, Drumline, and Horn Line.
They performed their show “Summer of Love,” under the direction of Jim Deprizio which included love songs such as “Can’t Stop Loving You,” “Happy Together,” and “Let the Sunshine In,” among others.
Fort Madison placed second and took a caption award for drum majors. West Liberty took third, and Keokuk came in fourth for the 3A Division.
In the 4A Division, Quincy High School swept the competition taking home took first placement and caption awards for drum majors, color guard, drumline, horn line.
They also snagged the Lennis Moore Fan Appreciation Award for the most fans to come watch their performance of “Off the Rails,” which included original compositions, “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and “Crazy Train,” under the direction of Jeff Duffy.
Muscatine and Ottumwa High Schools took second and third place respectfully for the 3A division of the invitational.
In addition to fierce competition from the visiting schools, Mt. Pleasant Middle and High School bands gave entertaining exhibition performances.
The high school band performed their show “The Power of One,” which included “One” by Three Dog Night, “All by Myself,” by Eric Carmen, and “Butterflies and Hurricanes,” by MUSE under the direction of Brad Cook, Laura Westfall, and Adam Creager.
The middle school band performed “Escape” and “Hot N Cold” arranged by Doug Adams directed by Creager and Westfall.
