Mark Hamilton was honored by the Mount Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission on May 7 for his outstanding achievement in the preservation of the commercial building at 100 S. Main Street, Mount Pleasant where he operated the American Family Insurance Agency for many years.
The award was presented by the Mount Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission at the Chamber’s Alive After Five event hosted by the Mount Pleasant Childcare Center.
The building was constructed in 1891 as the Henry County Savings Bank. The date 1891 and the word “Bank” are still visible on the trim above the main entrance. In 1930, the Henry County Savings Bank moved across the square to occupy the newer bank building at 101 S. Jefferson and the building at 100 S. Main soon housed the Hi Hat Café. Over the years, several restaurants, a record shop, and Becker’s Jewelers were located in the building. In 2007, Mark Hamilton opened the American Family Insurance agency there, where it continues to this day.
In the spring of 2024, Hamilton had the building repainted and brought its former elegance back to life. As the old paint was scraped off on the north side, the words “Henry County Savings Bank” became visible. The new paint scheme is gray with burgundy trim, featuring gold and green accents in the cornice. The words “Henry County Savings Bank” have been restored in their original location.
The Historic Preservation Commission presents a Historic Preservation Award annually to a property owner who has done outstanding work in persevering the historic resources of the community.
