Mid-Prairie and Washington send students to state speech
Students showed their best performances

MT. VERNON — Mid-Prairie and Washington High School individual speech teams joined other southeast Iowa speech teams over the weekend at Mount Vernon High School for the Individual Speech District contest.
“The Mid-Prairie High School Speech team is advancing 16 of their 17 Individual Events to the Iowa High School Speech Association's State IE Speech Contest on Saturday, March 11 at North Scott High School,” Mid-Prairie speech and drama coach Christine Meader said.
“The team participated in the IHSSA District IE Speech Contest on Saturday, Feb. 25 earning Division I ratings and advancing to IE State Contest,” she said.
Mid Prairie will send the following students to state contest:
Haydon Bailey, in Solo Musical Theatre and Solo Acting.
Jacob Carrillo, in Solo Acting and Solo Improvisation.
Kenadi Fay, in Storytelling and After Dinner Speaking.
Harlie Gehling, in Poetry and Radio News.
Isadora Goode, in Original Oratory.
Jack Greiner, in Solo Musical Theatre and Solo Improvisation.
Logan McClellen, in Storytelling.
Daniel Rodgers, in Reviewing and Poetry.
Caroline Schrader, in Solo Acting.
Avery Slaubaugh, in Solo Musical Theatre.
Mid-Prairie’s Jillian Clark also performed at districts and received a Division II rating in Solo Improv.
“At the IHSSA State Individual Events Contest, the performers will have the chance to be nominated to perform at the IHSSA All-State Individual Events Festival, which will occur on Monday, March 27 at UNI in Cedar Falls,” Meader stated. “At least two of three judges in each performer's center must nominate a student for them to qualify for All-State. Participants in the IHSSA All-State Individual Events Festival represent the top 5% of all IE participants across the state of Iowa.”
Meader coaches the speech team along with Lisa Helmuth.
Washington High School’s Individual Speech team will send nine of their 18 individual events onto the next level of competition.

Molly Klinzman, Literary Program and Storytelling
Rita Du, Solo Musical Theater
Keegan Colby, Solo Musical Theater
Maya Bruty, Reviewing
Luna Morris, Poetry
Bella Lujan qualified for state competition, while she is unable to attend state contest, her room judge told Lujan, “That is the best use of physicality I have seen all day.”
