MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant’s Homecoming Week started off a bit more somber than anticipated but has since picked up with traditions and excitement as the week continues.
Mt. Pleasant Community School District opted to change their initial Homecoming dress up day from a “’Merica Monday,” to Black and Yellow Day to show their support for the neighboring New London School District as they mourn the loss of a student. MPCHS students and staff showed up in NLCSD school colors Monday and signed a poster with condolences to show their support.
Homecoming activities picked up with more dress up days and the Homecoming assembly complete with performances by the MPCHS Panther Marching Band and cheerleaders. Staff and students also performed skits and competed in friendly games as the school kicked off their homecoming celebrations.
Tuesday night the MPCHS senior boys faced off with the junior boys for bragging rights in a best two out of three Boom Boom Volleyball match. With much enthusiasm and hard work, the senior boys secured the victory and successfully amped up the homecoming spirit.
The homecoming fun is far from over in Mt. Pleasant, however, as Boom Night begins Thursday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m. The activity cost $1 to attend at Maple Leaf Athletic Complex. Not only will the MPCHS girls show off their skills in Powder Puff Football, but the Homecoming Court, Junior Royalty, and Homecoming King and Queen will be announced at the event. Stop in early for a Booster Club supper beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Friday, before the big game, the homecoming parade will kick off at 3:01 near Wisdom Quest on Monroe Street. The marching band, floats, and other parade participants will show their Panther Pride as they make their way down Monroe Street toward Central Park. The parade will then take a right by Subway and another right on Madison Street as they make their way back toward the Mt. Pleasant Public Library.
The varsity game against the Washington Demons will begin at 7:30 p.m. and win or lose the Panthers will celebrate their school pride with the homecoming dance Saturday, Oct. 5 from 8-10:30 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Community High School
