MT. PLEASANT — From seasoned drama students to first-time performers, Mt. Pleasant High School’s cast of The Little Mermaid are excited to show off their hard work with their spring musical opening this Thursday at the Heatilator Performing Arts Center.
“When selecting this musical, Vocal Director Makenzie Kauffman-Ho and I wanted to choose a production that would showcase lots of voices because there were so many talented kids involved,” Director Ally Lowe explained. “We also wanted to choose a show that the whole community would want to come and see. With enough roles for a large cast and a beloved story known by everyone, The Little Mermaid felt like the perfect fit!”
While the story of The Little Mermaid is well known, Lowe says the show is still a must-see performance.
“There are songs unique to the musical that add even more humor and heart to the story,” Lowe said.
The story is brought to life by longtime drama participants such as senior Natalie McCormick, who will play Ariel. McCormick is more than excited to work with Lowe again after the fall play, Pride and Prejudice, and also excited for the opportunity to bring Ariel to life.
“Ariel is a typical teenager — stubborn and headstrong,” McCormick said. “However, along with that, she is extremely curious and naive, while also being heavily passionate and romantic, which ultimately motivates her to make the choices she makes.”
“I really wanted the opportunity to play Ariel and was ecstatic when I got the role!” McCormick said.
McCormick will perform alongside a large cast of varying experience including senior Andi Scott, who is dipping her toes into the drama for the first year. Scott thinks Sebastian is the perfect role for her and looks forward to showing the audience the confident, passionate, very anxious, and short-tempered crab during the musical.
“Exploring all sides of this character has been so fun!” Scott said.
Lowe says she is proud of all the work the team put into this production and is excited to show off it off. In addition to the students’ work, she can’t help but sing the praises for longtime high school costume designer Gayle Olson.
“She, along with an incredible team of volunteers, has gone above and beyond to create amazing costumes for our production,” Lowe said, “It is a sparkly show with lots of color and just so much fun.”
McCormick agrees saying, “People should come see the show because we've worked hard and it shows! The set, the lights, the band, the costumes, the people — everything and everyone has come together to create a fantastic production! You won't want to miss it!”
The show, which Scott says will be fun for people of all ages will premier Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. with additional performances the 22 and 23 at 7 p.m., as well. A matinee is planned for Sunday, March 24 at 2 p.m. All performances will be held at the Heatliter Performing Arts Center and ticket may be purchased at the door in advance at Brown’s Show Fit Co. in downtown Mt. Pleasant.
