MT. PLEASANT —Monday, July 15 All God’s Creatures and Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice received donations totaling $15,000 from staff and incarcerate individuals at Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility.
While Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility initially intended to present the checks outside, excessive heat moved the ceremony indoors, but that did not dampen the gratitude or excitement of those present.
Executive Director of the Great River Heath Foundation Jason Hutcheson accepted a donation of $10,000 on behalf of Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice which MPCF Warden Marcy Stroud described as “ is a community provider of comfort, care and compassion.”
“Hospice is a service for patients who have a life expectancy of six months or less,” Stroud explained. “Care goals change from treating the disease to providing comfort care. When patients are free of pain and other distressing symptoms, their energy can focus on what is important to them. This leads to better quality of life. Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice provides end-of-life physical, emotional and spiritual care to patients and families in Des Moines, Henry, Lee, Louisa and VanBuren counties.”
According to Stroud, the correctional facility has a hospice room that they have no used recently, so, the staff decided to donate money earned for that hospice room to Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice. Stroud explained that these funds are raised when MPCF employees pay for a car wash and detail from II labor at the facility.
All God’s Creatures Director Emily Davis accepted a donation of $5,000 raised through various II fundraisers held through the Recreation Department.
“Mt. Pleasant Correctional Facility is proud to present a $5,000 contribution to the fundraising effort to build Henry County's first animal shelter opening in 2024,” Stroud said.
Stroud described All God's Creatures Animal Shelter as a community oriented non-profit organization that serves Henry County and surrounding communities offering necessary medical care, including vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and treatment for any illnesses or injuries the animals may have. Once animals have all their medical and behavior needs met, they are available for adoption.
Additionally, Stroud stated that the prison is working toward creating a program that will allow inmates to care for abandoned kittens in the near future.
