MT. PLEASANT — The Mt. Pleasant Historic Preservation Commission presented Dixie McAllister with the 2024 Historic Preservation Award for her outstanding achievement in the rehabilitation of a commercial building in Mt. Pleasant.
The Commission presented McAllister with the award at the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce Alive After Five event hosted by Two Rivers Bank May 8 for her work on the 107 N. Main St. commercial building.
Built in approximately 1869, the building housed a number of businesses over the years. The first business, opened by Hervey Crane in 1869, sold books, stationary, watches, clocks, and jewelry. The Cobb & Williams Barbershop then occupied the building from 1893 until 1926, and the Palace Barbershop, run by Harley Smith, operated at 107 N. Main St. from 1926 until 1970. Leuellen’s ran a boy’s and men’s clothing shop in the building in the 1970s.
McAllister purchased the building in 1983 and did a major renovation at that time, including new front windows and an addition to the back. Main Street Frame operated in the building from 1985 until 2018. At that time, the south wall had become unstable, so McAllister completed a major renovation by completely rebuilding the south wall, thus saving the building.
The Historic Preservation Commission presents a Historic Preservation Award annually to a property owner who has done outstanding work in persevering the historic resources of the community.
