MT. PLEASANT — A Mt. Pleasant man has been ordered to appear in court after a hit-and-run crash last month.
Court records show 82-year-old Ronald Wayne Welcher received a summons for leaving the scene of an accident that caused injury or property damage.
Police said the crash happened around 8:43 p.m. on Aug. 23 in the 600 block of East Clay Street. A witness saw a black truck hit the back of a vehicle and then drive off, turning north onto North Walnut Street.
Officers found broken headlight pieces at the scene.
According to the affidavit, “Pieces of the headlight were matched to the defendant’s truck,” a 2014 Ford F-150 registered to Welcher.
Police spoke with Welcher the next day and noted he “appeared to be in an alcohol intoxicated state and/or having a decline of their mental status.”
When officers interviewed him again on Sept. 11, he said he did not remember the crash.
Welcher signed a promise to appear in court. His first hearing is scheduled for Oct. 9 at 9 a.m. at the Henry County Courthouse.
