Mt. Pleasant News accepting nominations for ‘Everyday Heroes’

Jul. 17, 2019 11:50 am
The Mt. Pleasant News is now accepting nominations of everyday heroes to honor at a special event at the Airport Road Vineyard in Mt. Pleasant on Sept. 26.
The News is accepting nominations from now until Monday, July 15, for everyday heroes. Everyday heroes are residents who make our communities better. They coach our teams, lead Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops, volunteer and lend a helping hand where it is needed.
'Everyday heroes is a chance to highlight community members who selflessly volunteer their time and talents, and the event is going to recognize volunteers of any age,” said Holy Frary, a sales representative for the Mt. Pleasant News.
Everyday heroes is anyone who serves as a model for bettering themselves and the community. Nominating an everyday hero pays tribute to them. If they are selected, they will be featured in a special edition of the newspaper in print and online in September.
Nominees do not have to accept the nomination, Frary said, adding that she understands if some people may want to remain anonymous.
'We'll honor and respect that as well,” Frary said.
Nominees must either live or work in Henry County. Frary stressed that an everyday hero can be anyone of any age, and she welcomes nominations of students and children in the community who are learning the importance of volunteering.
'It is a great opportunity to recognize the unsung heroes that live and work in Henry County who are doing extraordinary things for their neighbors and communities that often go unrecognized,” Frary said.
To nominate someone, write to the News in 250 words or less about someone who is making a difference in their community. Letters must include the name of the nominee, their hometown, their workplace, an email address and a phone number.
Nominations can be submitted to www.mpnews.net/hero; sent to the Mt. Pleasant News, Attn: Matt Bryant, at 119 West Monroe Street in Mt. Pleasant, 52641; or emailed to pub@mpnews.net.
Frary said that in a small town, a newspaper is the heart of a community.
'We have an avenue to feature these volunteers. After the event, we can showcase these individual award winners in the newspaper. What a better way to highlight these unsung heroes?” Frary said.
The presenting sponsor for Everyday Heroes is Shottenkirk in Mt. Pleasant. The breakfast sponsor is Allstate, Erica Lyndolph's agency, and the major sponsor is Hy-Vee.
