MT. PLEASANT — Mt. Pleasant Community School District Board member Sarah Donnolly announced her resignation, effective immediately via a Facebook post on Friday, March 7.
"After much reflection and discussion with my family and trusted colleagues, I have made the difficult decision to resign from my position on the Mt. Pleasant Community School District board of directors effective immediately," Donnolly wrote.
Donnolly, who was sworn into her position in November 2023, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve on the board and contribute to the school district.
"Serving on the board has been an honor, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our schools and community. I extend my sincere appreciation to those who have supported me throughout my tenure," she stated. "While I am stepping away from this role, my commitment to advocating for our students, teachers, and staff remains steadfast."
Donnolly also encouraged community members to remain engaged in school affairs.
"I encourage the residents of MPCSD to stay engaged — have conversations with your family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Meaningful change requires collective effort, and every voice matters," she said.
Donnolly concluded her announcement by thanking the community for their support and understanding.
"Thank you again for the privilege of serving our schools and community. I appreciate your understanding and support during this transition," she said.
Many responded to Donnolly’s announcement with gratitude for her time on the board, especially former educators.
“Thank you for all you have done for our community,” said retired elementary school teacher Jane Kinney.
Former first grade teacher at Mt. Pleasant Community Schools Lisa Ausburger also thanked Donnolly for serving on the board.
MPCSD Superintendent John Henriksen also expressed his appreciation for Donnolly’s service to the district. Henriksen explained the process for filling the vacancy created by her departure.
According to Henriksen, district policy states that the vacancy must be filled within 30 days via a board appointment.
Henriksen further explained that the board will publish a notice in the newspaper to inform the public of its intent to fill the vacancy by appointment. However, district residents have the right to petition for a special election.
"If the electors of the school district … file a petition within 14 days of the board's notice that they were going to fill that by appointment, that petition could call then for a vacancy to be filled by a special election," Henriksen said.
