The regional writers’ group, Mt. Pleasant Scribblers, met Monday, June 17, 2024, at noon for a luncheon at the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut Street.
Martha Wiley reported success as she reported her first book, Making Friends with Water, is now available on Amazon. She gave each Scribbler a bookmark describing this book and the next one that is also close to publication. She is delighted to share the publication efforts with her daughter and illustrator, Michelle Mirakian.
Valerie Kreutner started the sharing time with a quick bit of verse about a former student who was “loud and proud” but ended the year sharing a surprising and touching parting gift.
Claudia Streeter wrote about her experience hailing a cab in New York City with her son Jeff. The trip from the cruise ship to the airport with luggage in tow had a fare of close to $100.
Suzy Pool’s family gave her a book of writing prompts. She selected a story starter that inspired the description of the yearly car trip she made with her mother and brother to visit their grandmother who lived in Massachusetts.
Marilyn Vincent read about her memory of raising baby chicks. After the neighbor’s hunting dogs discovered the outdoor chicken pen, Marilyn’s family took the beloved chickens that remained out to join laying hens at grandma’s farm.
“June 2024” was about Darlene Lutes’ family preparing to launch a granddaughter into her new critical care nursing career. In the months that remain before her August departure, they will recreate many lifelong memories of games and feasts and treats. Part of the planning includes the game of Panguingue.
Kathy Casteel’s children’s book, A Year of Play, is taking shape with a colorful collection of recipes for Play Dough. She also read through the saga of “Internet Relationship” describing the agony of trusting the false front of a disturbed scam artist.
The “Peace-less Porch” describes Karen Osborne’s sanctuary for summer relaxation with books and bird watching. Unfortunately, her peace has been broken by a territorial barn swallow whose new rock-solid nest is over the door. Watch for Karen wearing a helmet as she sits, reading in her chair.
Rita Davis shared a bit of humorous verse about remembering events from the past like they were just yesterday. Sad to say that memories from yesterday may be fuzzy and remote!
Anyone with pithy sayings to use as filler for the anthology is encouraged to send them to Martha Wiley.
Scribblers are pleased to welcome new members who are interested in being part of a group, sharing efforts in the craft of writing. The next regular meeting will be in the gathering space of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 902 S. Walnut at 1 p.m., Monday, September 16.
