MT. PLEASANT — Less than a week after Henry County Assessor Nathan Milks informed the Henry County Board of Supervisors of a proposed settlement pertaining to the 2023 Walmart tax appeal case, court documents state “Counsel report the case has settled.”
Milks updated supervisors on ongoing discussions with Walmart over the company’s 2023 property tax appeal during the Aug. 7 department head meeting.
According to Milks, he was “working with our legal counsel and Walmart representatives on a possible settlement” but emphasized, “No decision has been made at this point in time.”
Walmart’s petition, filed in June 2023, challenged the county’s assessment of its Mt. Pleasant store at 1045 North Grand Avenue, which was valued at $11,627,110 that year. The company argued the assessment was “illegal, excessive, inequitable” and sought to have the value reduced.
“Their argument was that the assessed value of the Walmart store was $11,627,110 and in 2025 the market adjustment, they jumped $12,377,20 when we got the appraisal back,” Milks explained. “They were arguing that it should only be $8 million. Our appraisal came back for the value was $12.1 million, so I don’t really want to come off that part too much, but we’ll see what the attorney has to say. That’s where we’re at right now.”
By Aug. 12 an Order Establishing Deadline for Settlement Documents revealed that a settlement must have been made between Walmart and the Henry County Board of Review.
The court ordered that a dismissal or proposed consent order be submitted on or before Oct. 20, 2025, when a review is scheduled at the Henry County District Court in Mt. Pleasant. The exact terms of the settlement have not yet been disclosed.
