Clone Swarts, manager of the Winfield Elevator, stands in the doorway Jan. 1, 1936 at the Winfield Elevator on the east end of town during one of the oldest winter in history.
In late January 1936 temperatures dropped to 30 degrees below zero then remained in below 20 degrees for most of January and February. It remained below freezing for 17 consecutive days in many places throughout the state.
The winter of 1963 has also gone down in history as the fourth snowiest in Iowa.
