NEW LONDON — For the 11th year, Annie and Marcus Powell invite the community to the annual Thanksgiving Dinner held, Thursday Nov. 24 at Clark Elementary 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
When the Powell’s realized Meals on Wheels recipients were not receiving a meal for Thanksgiving, they were motivated to do something.
“After the first year, we had such a good response and my family was hooked,” Annie Powell said. “We just had to continue to do it every year.”
While the Powell’s fund the dinner, community donations are crucial in the execution.
“We always get donations the day of to cover the cost of the meal,” Annie Powell said.
“We could not do it without the help of community,” she said. “This is truly a community event. We have individuals and families that help ever year and others that help when they don't have plans with their own family.”
“It is a free event,” she said. “You can come and just eat or come volunteer and eat. It's a fun event for families and those and those not able to be with family for Thanksgiving.”
The meal will consist of fried turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and treat from local volunteers.
Considering Meals on Wheels recipients inspired the event, it makes sense that the Powell’s also offer free delivery for the New London and Mt. Pleasant areas.
Those in need of delivery are asked to schedule ahead via call or text to (319) 457-0110 by Wednesday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m.
“This year we have 31 deliveries so far,” Annie Powell said.
