MT. PLEASANT — As the Mt. Pleasant Community Band once again took to Central Park for their weekly concert, Director Adam Creager once again brought flamingos, the P.E.O. brought pie, Arts IMPACT brought face painting, and the audience brought their lawn chairs.
During last week’s concert, Creager announced a contest to design a community band T-shirt.
Accompanied by a handful of lawn flamingos, which made their debut the week prior as an unofficial mascot for the community band, an example of a previous band shirt hung from a speaker near the band as they played.
The last shirt designed for the band comes in maroon and gold with a tree on the back.
“In order for our band to have a uniform look at our concerts we are inviting any and all to submit T-shirt designs for a new Mt. Pleasant Community Band T-shirt,” Creager said. “It could have musical notes or something. It doesn’t have to have a tree. It can have a tree, though.”
“But we invite you, if you’re so inclined to be a creator of said T-shirt design,” he said.
The parameters for the design are as follows:
1. It must be a solid color.
2. Designers must use the words Mt. Pleasant Community Band, “in some way shape or form.”
3. Designs should include a graphic or logo to enhance the shirt
Creager encourages anyone with design ideas or questions to reach out to him.
“Designers should submit picture designs in PDF form to Adam.creager@mtpcsd.org OR message me via Facebook,” Creager said. “All designs are due Monday, July 10th.”
According to Creager, the winning design will be selected by current band members.
“On our July 11 rehearsal, we'll have a community band vote on which t shirt design we like,” he said.
The winner of the design contest will receive a $25 gift card for their design.
“Then next season, hopefully, we'll all have a matching t shirt, look a little bit more uniform,” Creager said.
“We're not classy, as I told them,” Creager joked. “They're all beautiful people, but maybe if we all look the same, it would be better.”
The band continued to fill downtown with tunes such as “The Best Moment of the Day,” by Rob Romeyn, “Down on the Delta,” by Carol Britain Chambers, “Sumus Futuro (We are the Future),” by Alfred Reed, “Andalucia,” by Alfred Reed, and “Ember Skies,” by Kevin Day.
Following a medley of music from West Side story, Creager provided another announcement to the audience.
“We have a special guest with us here,” Creager said. “I told him we were going to have a big reveal, if you will. It would be a lot more exciting if we had, like a sheet or something to pull off of him, but we have sitting in with us tonight, Mr. Brad Cook, our new high school band director back there on trombone.”
A round of applause welcomed Cook as Creager invited attendees to welcome him to Mt. Pleasant.
According to Creager, Cook and his family are moving to the area from the Urbandale area and spent the first half of his day in Mt. Pleasant Thursday working with MPCSD’s marching band drum line.
Wrapping up the evening, the community enjoyed their tradition of P. E. O pies and children giggled as they received face paintings from Annie Guldberg thanks to Arts IMPACT and the band played “Pop and Rock Legends: Chicago!” by John Wasson.
With an announcement that next week, Thursday, June 29, the traditional bubble parade will return, the band completed their concert as they always do with a Karl King song. This week they finished with his song, “Bonds.”
