MT. PLEASANT — Henry County residents will now face a few more rules on open burning during state-issued burn bans, after supervisors voted July 24 to approve a new ordinance with no further public readings or hearings.
The board approved the first reading of the ordinance, then voted to waive the second and third readings.
“in short, if there is a burn ban put on, you'll have no open burning in the county except by certain exceptions,” Supervisor Marc Lindeen explained.
The ordinance prohibits open burning when the State Fire Marshal issues a Red Flag Warning or burn ban, with exceptions for contained, attended fires used for cooking, heating, or certain agricultural practices.
The ordinance comes after months of debate. During discussions with the Board of Supervisors some residents expressed concern that the ordinance was overly broad and difficult to enforce. Supervisors responded by emphasizing education and communication during the drafting process.
In previous meetings, Supervisor Chad White said the county's goal was “not about punishing people, but about public safety and protecting property.”
During the first official and final reading of the ordinance, the supervisors reiterated the importance of communicating with officials when conducting a burn to help mitigate resources being wasted going out to controlled burns that do not need assistance.
The finalized version reflects compromises including clearer language on exemptions and enforcement procedures. A full copy of the adopted ordinance is available through the Henry County Auditor’s Office or online at www.henrycounty.iowa.gov
