MT. PLEASANT — Applause, handshakes, kind words, and photos celebrated the retirement of two longtime Mt. Pleasant Police Officers at the Wednesday, Dec. 27 city council meeting.
Officers Michael Stalder and Richard Lanphier will officially retire from the department effective Dec. 31 after 28 and 33 years of service, respectively.
Mayor Steve Brimhall read resolutions stating that the mayor and city council would like to recognize and honor each man for their years of “dedicated, loyal and honorable continuous service with the police department.”
Mt. Pleasant Police Chief Lyle Murray also expressed his appreciation, saying, “I would like to thank and recognize Michael Stalder and Richard Lanphier for their years of service to the Mt. Pleasant Police Department and City of Mt. Pleasant and surrounding area.”
According to Murray, Stalder began his career as a police officer in Washington in 1992 and started with MPPD May 30, 1995.
Lanphier became an officer with MPPD Sept. 2, 1990.
“To replace two guys with over thirty years of experience is not an easy task,” Murray said. “It has been my privilege to work with both of them. Mike and Richard sacrificed family time doing their jobs, missing out on birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. This impacts their family that we would also like to recognize.”
“Both officers received numerous letters of commendation and letters of thanks over the years which speaks volumes about how they serve our community,” he said.
“Your outstanding service has made a lasting impact on our community,” Murray said to Stalder and Lanphier. “Thank you for your years of service and dedication to them safe and we wish you the best.”
Each officer shook hands and received thank yous and congratulations from the board and many community members.
With the retirement of Police Officers Rich Lanphier and Michael Stalder, the city council approved the hiring of Storm E. Swanson.
At the Dec. 27 meeting the city council also approved the purchase of a new police department vehicle at $44,050.
According to Brimhall, the city purchases a new vehicle each year for the department.
