MT. PLEASANT, Iowa — Mark Overberg won Tuesday’s special election for the Mt. Pleasant Community School District Board, defeating Todd Liechty by a vote of 522 to 339.
A total of 861 ballots were cast ahead of time and on Election Day, May 13, St. Alphonsus Manning Hall to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of board member Sarah Donnolly earlier this year. Rather than appoint a replacement, residents petitioned for a public election.
Overberg, a lifelong Salem resident, brings decades of experience in manufacturing and farming, as well as deep roots in the local community. His election comes at a critical time for families in Salem, as the school board continues to discuss the future of Salem Elementary. The district’s long-range facilities planning has raised concerns about the potential closure of the building, which many residents view as a vital part of their community.
During his campaign, Overberg emphasized the importance of maintaining neighborhood schools and ensuring that community voices are heard in district decisions. His presence on the board is seen by many as a step toward more inclusive and representative governance, particularly for smaller communities like Salem that are directly impacted by district-wide changes.
Overberg’s presence on the board offers a voice from Salem at the table, something supporters say is essential as the district weighs decisions that could significantly affect smaller towns in the district. His campaign emphasized the need to involve the public in those conversations and to make decisions that reflect the priorities of all communities within the district.
“I would like to thank everyone for your support and encouragement for helping me win this election,” Overberg said in a public statement. “This is only the beginning; let’s continue to work together and make a difference. Teachers, kids and education are important.”
Liechty, a former Mt. Pleasant High School principal, also ran on a platform focused on student achievement and open communication. While the candidates shared similar goals, voters chose Overberg to represent District Two.
Overberg is expected to be sworn in at an upcoming board meeting. His addition comes as the district continues to work on financial planning, student programs and future infrastructure decisions — including those directly affecting rural attendance centers.
