MT. PLEASANT — Homecoming festivities reigned supreme in Mt. Pleasant last week with school spirit on display throughout the town.
While the Mt. Pleasant Community High School’s football team was not able to secure a victory against Washington in the big game, there were plenty of opportunities to support and celebrate one another throughout homecoming week.
While the senior boys secured a victory in Boom Boom Volleyball early in the week, the senior girls were not as lucky as the Junior girls earned their own victory in the annual Powder Puff football game with the stands full of their classmates cheering them on.
Older Mt. Pleasant Community School District students also took it upon themselves last week to build school spirit in their younger classmates by making visits to the various elementary schools throughout the district. Football players, cheerleaders, and even the Panther mascot made their way to each building where they greeted the students with high-fives, smiles, and school cheers to celebrate homecoming together as a whole district.
This year’s homecoming court included King Zach Newton and Queen Addison Peck along with Cooper Coleman, Payton Walker, Owen Baker, Dane Cook, Charice Auqerda, Alexis Wagner, Alexa Fuller, and Tori Wilson.
The homecoming court was accompanied by many others as they rode through the streets of Mt. Pleasant Friday afternoon as a last push to build Panther spirit in the community. Other parade participants included the Panther Marching band, middle school marching band, and other school groups like iJAG. Midwest Old Threshers Miss Sweet 16 winners smiled and waved as they also made their way along the route. Sirens from law enforcement and fire department vehicles lead the way and many other representatives of the community showed up to not only watch the parade, but participate and show their support.
The Mt. Pleasant Community School District Panther Nation showed up in large numbers to the Bob Evans field to fill the stands with cheers of support throughout the game Friday night. The student section rarely, if ever, took a seat, and cheers were heard throughout the game.
Despite the loss, MPCHS students enjoyed one last send off to homecoming week with a festive dance held at the high school.
Even throughout a week that focused on Mt. Pleasant school pride, though, the district opted to look outside of themselves. Panthers came together to show their support for the nearby school district of New London after a tragic loss of a student at the end of their own homecoming festivities the week before.
They showed their support by not only wearing New London’s school colors for one of their dress-up days, but also by painting the school’s logo on the Bob Evans Field for the homecoming game.
