As the warm weather sets in, it is easy to be too relaxed when it comes to keeping your vehicle in tip-top shape, but even after the cold has come and gone, a few steps can assure your spring isn’t laced with unfortunate surprises.
Tim Phillips at Phillips Auto Clinic in Mt. Pleasant has some helpful tips for tuning up your vehicle for the spring months.
Phillips says the problem he encounters most in the spring is trouble with the air conditioner. He says on the first warm day of the year, plenty of people realize something is amiss with the way they cool down their car.
“Usually it is ‘my air conditioner is not quite working right, or not at all,’” Phillips says. “Sometimes it can be as simple as a new cabin filter, which is always a good idea spring and fall, but you may need a professional repair done.”
Low tire pressure is a common trouble-causer in the winter, but drivers should also keep an eye out when it gets hot. Phillips says tires don’t need to be swapped out for spring, but attention should still be given.
“With people getting ready to travel and such, along with busy schedules for sports and activities, they will need checked to make sure they are in good condition,” Phillips says.
Phillips says the most essential thing a car owner should do is a general check of vehicle by their local mechanic. He points to a couple of key parts that need extra attention.
“Most people know winter can be hard on batteries,” Phillips says. “Most don’t realize hot weather is just as tough, so get your battery and fluids checked.”
Phillips also says to check under the car and fenders for loose plastic, which can be the product of snow buildup.
