MT. PLEASANT—For Red Ribbon Week, schools across the nation celebrated healthy, drug-free life choices with dress up days, guest speakers, and activities.
Mt. Pleasant’s Van Allen Elementary’s after-school program celebrated the week with a visit from Iowa State University Extension Office’s Tobacco Prevention Coordinator Chris Kempker.
Students were shown the negative long-term effects of smoking through the presentation of pig lungs.
“Many of the youth were very surprised to learn that all vape pens contain high levels of the addictive drug nicotine, as well as many harmful chemicals,” Kempker said.
