MT. PLEASANT — For the second year Henry County Pork Producers have provided hundreds of pounds of pork to food pantries county-wide this past spring.
With many food pantries frequently running short on meat products, the nearly 400 pounds of ground pork donations made by Henry County Pork Producers to Community Action of Southeast Iowa, The Fellowship Cup, and food pantries in New London, Winfield, and Wayland go a long way to feed the communities served by these organizations. These local donations were made possible by partnering with Crawford Meat Plant, Inc. who helped process the donated meat.
“Winfield Food Pantry and its patrons thank you,” Food pantry representative Rick Mullen said following the April donation.
Henry County Pork Producers purchased pork donations in the county and received reimbursement for up to $1,000 of pork products for the Iowa Pork Producers Association’s Pork in the Pantry Program.
“Food insecurity remains a major issue in Iowa, and these donations to local food pantries will help,” IPPA President Matt Gent said. “Pork producers care a lot about their communities, and this is one of the many ways we show it.”
Donations across the state for this program equated to more than $43,000 worth of pork being donated by 38 county pork producer organizations.
