WINFIELD — Santa chose a unique form of transportation to visit Winfield and surrounding towns, this week.
Santa arrived in Winfield, Wednesday, Dec. 21 with Wemiga Waste Systems.
He accompanied waste management crews as they picked up trash throughout Winfield.
Before heading out of town, Santa stopped by the school to wave at all the children as they excitedly began their holiday break.
Heather Andrus-Adams and James Andrus began sending Santa along James’ route with Adams Sanitary Disposal a couple of years ago.
“We had a Santa suit given to us, and James just ran with it,” Heather said.
Every year, Santa does James’ work for a day and gives small gifts to the children he encounters.
Heather’s uncle owned Adams Sanitary Disposal when they first began, and “he helped with gifts and wrapping,” she said.
In March, Wemiga Waste Systems took over Adams Sanitary Disposal services.
“When the company switched, the towns still wanted Santa to continue,” Heather said.
So, the couple approached Wemiga to ensure James’ new employer approved of the holiday guest.
This year, James, Heather, and some donations provide the gifts as Santa continues to spread holiday cheer.
“This is something James and I do every year to give back,” Heather said. “James absolutely loves all the smiles. He just enjoys making people happy.”
Santa also visits Wapello, Morning Sun, Oakville, and Grandview, this time of year.
