MT. PLEASANT — The jury trial for a Henry County man accused of sexual assault has been postponed.
Maddison Millard, 20, of Mt. Pleasant, was set to stand trial before a jury April 12 in accordance with the defense’s motion to demand Millard’s right to a speedy trial.
The defense, however, filed to waive Millard’s right to a speedy trial only one day before it was meant to take place.
The reason for waiving this right was not given by defense or prosecution attorneys upon interview.
The trial has now been postponed until May 2
Once the trial begins, Millard, who is being tried as a habitual offender, will face the jury charged with two counts of sexual abuse in the third degree (Class C felony).
The charges stem from an accusation of Millard participating in sex acts with a 14-year-old between August and September 2021.
This is not Millard’s first interaction with law enforcement.
A number of Millard’s charges were filled against him December 2021 Millard was charged with robbery in the second-degree (Class C felony), trafficking stolen weapons (Class D felony), felon in possession of firearm (Class D felony), possession with intent to delivery ecstasy (Class B felony), and possession with intent to deliver marijuana (Class D felony).
The defense has already entered a plea of “not guilty” in response to the sexual abuse charges.
Millard is represented by Curtis Dial of Keokuk.
There have been no further motions at this time.
