MT. PLEASANT — The Henry County Farm Bureau Supermarket Sweep made a triumphant return to Mt. Pleasant Hy-Vee last week as five teams came together to raise just under $1,500 worth of donations for The Fellowship Cup.
Henry County Farm Bureau replaced their Cram the Cab fundraising event for National Agriculture Week with the Supermarket Sweep last year as a way to raise funds in a more interactive manner.
Supermarket Sweep pits teams against each other in friendly competition to try to collect as close to $250 in groceries in only five minutes. Not only did teams need to keep track of how much they spent, but they also needed to grab items from a list of most-needed items for food pantry shelves. All items purchased by the teams are then donated to The Fellowship Cup.
Farm Credit Services of America took home the bragging rights as they checked out with $256.50 worth of groceries.
Other bragging rights went to Mt. Pleasant Noon Rotary with greatest grabber. Noon Rotary bagged $471.05 worth of donations during the sweep.
Henry County Farm Bureau Outreach Coordinator Sarah Seitz said the large grab from Noon Rotary and other participants increased the total donation by nearly 50% over last year, coming in at $1,466.51.
The event not only brought in donations, but the teams enjoyed the time running through the store collecting items and even decorating their carts. Henry County Sheriff’s Office even walked away with Best Decorated Cart thanks to Mike Yaley and Kurt Alvine covering the cost of groceries so their team could participate.
“This was an absolute blast and a wonderful opportunity to be able to give back to our local community,” Henry County Sheriff’s Office stated.
Other teams Iowa State Bank which nabbed a cart totaling $264.32 and Chem Gro which grabbed $202.75 in groceries.
