MT. PLEASANT — Midwest Old Threshers Reunion is known for their display of steam engines, especially the steam engine train that runs the grounds throughout the reunion.
When asked about some of the most iconic must-see experiences for Old Threshers, participating in a train robbery was among the top suggestions.
Outside of the train depot a sign sits with times of events where onlookers can witness robberies of the saloon, the bank, and yes, the train.
Before an active train robbery occurs, a rope is tied up to keep spectators at a safe distance as carefully planned chaos ensues.
This means Old Threshers Reunion goers do not need to be on the train to witness some of the naughty fun brought by the robber and sheriff actors.
Being on the train, however, literally offers a different point of view.
As the conductor comes by to stamp tickets, he also hands out Old Threshers $3 bills.
After loading the train at the second depot and making the return trip to the North Village, menacing bandits took to the train cars and told passengers to raise their hands and give up their money.
Giggles escaped little lips.
“What are you laughing at?” one robber asked a young passenger. “You just got robbed.”
A few little riders chose rebellion.
“No, It’s my money,” one rider said.
Another passenger later informed the conductor with a sly grin that she hid her money.
As the besieged train pulled into North Village Depot, sheriffs waited to take the bandits into custody.
A shoot out full of snaps, pops, and smoke filled the roped off area just outside the train cars.
The bad guys gave their best efforts, but found themselves out maneuvered by the valiant efforts of the sheriffs.
The crowd cheered, the “dead” raised from their fallen positions, and spectators approached the actors for autographs and photos.
