WASHINGTON — After 14 vocalists and three instrumentalists from Mt. Pleasant Community High School auditioned for the All-State Music Festival this last Saturday at Washington High School, three students will perform at the 2023 festival next month.
According to the MPCHS Music Department, of the 14 vocalists, eight received recalls and three were selected for the honor of performing with the All-State Chorus,.
Natalie McCormick was selected as a soprano one, Summer Schroeder as an alto one, and Tien Nguyen as a tenor one.
According to new vocal director Makenzie Kauffman, “District Auditions for the 278-piece All-State Band, 214-piece All-State Orchestra, and 601-member All-State Chorus were held Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at Le Mars, Hapton, Independence, Atlantic, Indianola, and Washington. Approximately 25% of the students who audition are selected for membership in the All-State ensembles.”
The Iowa High School Music Association states that all auditions are performed a cappella in which vocalists perform a portion of chosen All-State selections within a seven-minute audition time.
Students are judged on “...Intonation, Rhythm, Tone Quality, and Musicianship. 10 points will be awarded in each of the four categories, with the total score used to determine accepted and recalled students,” IHSMA states.
“Participants will rehearse in Ames on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18, and the Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State University, Ames, on Saturday evening, Nov. 18,” Kauffman said.
This event will be recorded for a rebroadcast by Iowa PBS. Please check the Iowa PBS website (www.iowapbs.org) for the exact dates and times.
“This program is under the auspices of the Iowa High School Music Association and the Iowa Music Educators Association,” Kauffman said.
