CEDAR RAPIDS — Iowa Wesleyan had everything clicking in the first five minutes of its weekend contest against Mount Mercy, but couldn’t stave off the Mustangs’ charge, falling 67-58.
The Tigers quickly found momentum in the beginning of the first half, going on a 10-2 run. Over the course of the first period, Iowa Wesleyan had built a lead as large as 11 points.
Late in the half, the Tigers squandered the lead, and the Mustangs took charge. By the halftime whistle, Mount Mercy held 67-58.
In the second, both teams were at a stalemate. The Tigers finally gain some ground, cutting the lead to four points with just over three and a half minutes to go in the game.
Despite the comeback, the Mustangs would end the quarter on a run of their own, sealing the win.
Dylan Hurley led the Tigers with 18 points, two blocks, two assists, and two rebounds. Victor Munoz finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and three blocks.
Iowa Wesleyan shot 35% from the field and 23% from three.
The Tigers, now 5-9, will return to action on Dec. 29 in Bellevue, Nebraska, taking part in the Hampton Inn Bruin Classic.
