WAYLAND — A tradition spanning multiple generations returned to Wayland as the small community’s Lions Club once again hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at West Park.
Parents chaperoned close to 100 children ranging from infants through sixth grade as they partook in the beloved Wayland tradition of hunting eggs at West Park Saturday afternoon.
“I’ve been a Lions Club member for 58 years and I think we’ve had an egg hunt ever since I started,” Stan Meyer said.
Jo Eichelberger, who also helps with the egg hunt, stated that after many years, attending the hunt is just part of the routine for many families now.
Stan says he still enjoys helping with the egg hunt but the responsibility for the activity now lies on the shoulders of his nephew Jay Meyer who loves to watch the varied age groups simply come together and have fun.
As a group of Lions Club members and other event helpers, including the Meyer’s men and Eichelberger, chatted they reminisced about the hunts of the past.
One man recalled how the eggs used to hold marshmallow bags when he was a kid. According to Eichelberger, in previous years some of the eggs contained quarters and at another point the eggs simply had dollar amounts written on them for the children to claim.
“They used to have to turn them in for a quarter before that,” Stan recalled.
Stan continues stuffing eggs, this year, they all contained quarters for the little hunters to gather alongside candy spread throughout West Park.
No matter what the eggs are filled with, however, the youngest residents of Wayland always seem to enjoy filling their baskets as they celebrate Easter at West Park.
