MT. PLEASANT — As last week came to a close, Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Mt. Pleasant Police Department responded to two definitively different motor vehicle incidents in the middle of the night.
On Jan. 26 at approximately 12:19 a.m., the Mt. Pleasant Police Department performed a traffic stop in the intersection of 235th Street and Blackhawk Lane. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the traffic stop.
Prior to the stop, law enforcement observed a small Chevrolet pickup swerving, speeding, and failing to dim its lights. The traffic stop identified the driver as, Susan Butts, 42, of Burlington. Butts received several traffic warnings and was charged with Operating While Under the Influence, first offense.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Henry County Deputy Sheriff Logan Bass, he assisted a Mt. Pleasant Police Officer with Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.
Bass stated that as he listened to the exchange between Butts and the MP Police Officer, he heard the defendant admit to having “a few drinks a couple hours ago.”
In criminal complaint Bass stated that Butts showed signs of impairment during the “Walk and Turn Test,” “One Leg Stand Test,” and “Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test.”
According to Bass’ account, Butts also blew .146 in a Preliminary Breath Test during the traffic stop. She then blew .194 Breath Alcohol Content for a Data Master test at 2:05 a.m. The legal BAC level is .08.
Just under 24 hours earlier on Jan. 25, at approximately 1:06 a.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single vehicle collision involving a deer in the 1100 grid of Oasis.
An investigation into the collision determined a 2014 Buick Regal, driven by Jason Hoaglin, 50, of Winfield, was traveling southbound on Oasis when a deer ran out into the middle of the roadway, striking the front passenger’s side of the vehicle.
No injuries were reported. Damage to the vehicle was estimated to be $3,500. Vehicle removed from the scene.
