MT. PLEASANT — Henry County Planning and Zoning Coordinator Joe Buffington encourages Rural Henry County property owners wanting or needing updated or new E-911 signs to apply before July 1 to save money.
These address signs, which should be visible from the road, act as useful markers for travelers, mail carriers, and emergency services throughout rural Henry County.
Henry County Code 4-1-7 “Responsibility of Installation and Maintenance of Building Number Signs” outlines that property owners hold the responsibility for obtaining, installing, and maintaining these signs at residences and businesses in the unincorporated area of the county. These signs must adhere to specifications outlined in the code pertaining to a variety of specifications including but not limited to height, color, and placement.
While the code only dictates that homes and businesses must display these blue or green address signs, Buffington says he sees landowners request addresses for various parcels of lands throughout rural Henry County.
Requests to add addresses not required by the code go through the Planning and Zoning office. Much like a new build, Planning and Zoning will assign an address number to the parcel then place that information in a digital file used by county staff to help locate properties when inquiries are received.
“Nobody wants an ambulance wandering around when they’re looking for an emergency,” Buffington said. “These could be useful for any farm building or animal confinement where people will be working in case something happens and they need help.”
Currently property owners will pay $65 for new or replacement address markers, but as of July 1, 2024, the price will increase to $85. This cost includes the sign and installation. So, Buffington encourages rural residents to check existing signs or request new addresses now before the price increase.
To request a replacement or new sign, property owners can either call the Planning and Zoning office at (319) 385-2146 or follow the application link located at www.henrycounty.iowa.gov/911-addressing
