Veterans are honored in communities
Veterans Day services hosted in Henry, Jefferson, and Washington counties

Friday, Nov. 11, the country will honor veterans of the United States Military with various ceremonies and celebrations.
Henry County
Hy-Vee will offer free breakfast to all veterans and active duty military 6-10 a.m. and 15% off all grocery purchases all day.
Winfield-Mount Union School will hold a Veterans Day Assembly at 9:30 a.m., Friday in the gym.
All veterans, their families and all community members are invited to help celebrate Veterans of the United States Military Services with a short assembly followed by refreshments in the lobby.
New London High School will host a Veterans Day assembly at 9:30 a.m. in Lorber Gym.
Henry County will observe Veterans Day at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Room at the Veteran’s Hall in Mt. Pleasant.
Mt. Pleasant Main Street Art Center will host a book signing at noon, Friday.
Author Curt Swarm will perform a book reading and signing of his book Task Force IED at the Art Center, attendees are invited to bring their own lunch, and the Art Center will provide beverages.
Hillsboro Christian Church will host their annual Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Community Dinner at noon Sunday, Nov. 13 in the Hillsboro Community Center. Free will donations are accepted and will go to the Veterans Freedom Center in Dubuque.
VFW Post 7641 Auxiliary will host a Veterans Brunch Sunday Nov. 13 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Jefferson County
Hy-Vee will offer free breakfast to all veterans and active duty military 6-10 a.m. and 15% off all grocery purchases all day. That same day, Sieda will begin its Christmas Toy Collection, and Fairfield Hy-Vee is one of the places to drop off toys, from Nov. 11 through Dec. 11. The program gives gifts to needy families in town.
Fairfield High School will hold a Veterans Day assembly at 9 a.m., Friday. Pastor Joseph Phipps, SEI Regional Fire Honor Guard, FHS Choir, Principal Aiddy Phomvisay, Sergeant First Class James T. Salts, FHS Band, and Staff Sergeant Jason Glass will lead the assembly.
Elks Lodge will host a Pork Loin Dinner at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will include pork loin, mashed potatoes and gravy, vegetable, and dinner roll. Veterans are free and guests pay $15.99 for the dinner.
Saturday, Nov. 12, Lockridge Veterans Association and the City of Lockridge will host a brief Veterans Day Celebration. At 8:30 a.m. the public may meet in the community center for fellowship, coffee, tea, juice, and pastries. There will be a program at 9 a.m.
Washington County
Riverside:
At 10 a.m. on Nov. 11, the local VFW Post will hold a flag ceremony at the Riverside Casino main entrance. Shortly after the ceremony, the casino invites all veterans to a free lunch at Robert’s Buffet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nonveterans will be charged $17.99.
At 11 a.m., the VFW Post will hold a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Park in Riverside.
At 12 p.m.: members will be serving chicken wings, fish and french fries at the VFW Post in Riverside
Washington:
On Nov. 11, Hy-Vee will offer free breakfast for all veterans and active duty military members from 6-10 a.m.
The American Legion will hold its Veterans Day service at Blair House in Washington at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11. The event will include featured speaker Rob Northup and a performance from Washington Middle School choir members.
Wellman:
On Thursday, Nov. 10 (the day before Veterans Day) Mid-Prairie High School’s Student Leadership Team and the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America will hold an Veterans Day assembly and luncheon at the high school gymnasium. The assembly will begin at 10:30 a.m., and complementary luncheon will follow.
