WAYLAND — WACO Warriors from throughout the WACO community gathered at the high school, Wednesday evening to amp up their school spirit in anticipation of their homecoming game Friday evening.
While much of homecoming week focuses on the big football game at the end of the week, WACO focused on school spirit as a whole.
They not only lead the gym full of people in the school fight song and cheers, but also took time to recognize other school athletes in cross country, e-sports, and volleyball.
When it came time to recognize the football team specifically, Coach Chad Edeker brought the whole team to the center of the gym floor.
“You know, I say this every year,” Edeker said. “But it is absolutely amazing the fact that we have 36 kids out for football.”
Edeker further expressed his gratitude for the community, much of which attended Boom Night, that supports the school and specifically this football team.
“We are proud to represent you guys,” Edeker said. “You guys support us greatly.”
With a roar of applause Edeker mentioned that WACO hadn’t played Easton Valley, the homecoming competitors, in many years, and that he really wanted to beat them this year.
Despite a little technical difficulty, these football players kept with tradition and then put on a show as they made their way through the Evolution of Dance followed by a similarly well-received performance by the dance team.
A different kind of excitement filled the gym as a spotlight homed in on the homecoming court of Reece Oswald, Chase Waterhouse, Colton Leichty, Halle Shelman, Haley Hughes, and Marie Farmer.
Armed with the tallied votes taken earlier that day, Joel Meyer from student council crowned Colton Leichty Homecoming King. Leichty then crowned Marie Farmer as the Homecoming Queen.
With the king and queen named, the rest of the evening consisted of fun games of Boom Boom Volleyball and Powder Puff Football.
