WAYLAND — WACO Community School District Administration and law enforcement ensured the safety of students and staff as they investigated an anonymous threat on social media involving WACO schools for Wednesday, Sept. 18.
“There is a trend around the country for folks to try and instill an uneasy sense in a few select school districts with a vague text message and then pick different districts the next day to do the same thing,” WACO Superintendent Ken Crawford shared in a letter to the community. “I believe the work done by the administration and police force to have a positive collaboration that ensures the safety of our students and staff is to be commended.”
WACO is certainly not alone. With under one month of school under the belt of most Iowa schools, the Governor’s School Safety Bureau reports they’ve received 50 tips through the Safe+Sound Iowa app. Safety Bureau Chief Matt Anderson has reported 12 arrests or citations made thus far this year. Additionally, the bureau has helped with 39 reports not associated with Safe+Sound.
According to their website, “Safe+Sound Iowa is a free anonymous school threat reporting tool for all public and accredited non-public schools across the state provided by the Governor’s School Safety Bureau and the Iowa Department of Public Safety. Students, school staff, parents and community members can submit school safety concerns anonymously using the Safe+Sound Iowa mobile app, website or our toll-free tip line.”
