WAYLAND — From state championships to national competitions, the WACO FFA chapter continues to break new ground in agricultural education as it grows.
FFA at WACO isn’t just about competitions — it’s about cultivating leadership, service, and innovation in agriculture. Over the past year, the chapter has demonstrated all three, with members reaching new heights on both state and national levels.
One of the most significant milestones for WACO FFA this year was its first-ever appearance at a National Contest. The Poultry Evaluation team — comprised of Kyler Rugg, Morgan Leichty, Emily Rinner, and Cameron Rinner — competed in Indianapolis, earning a silver team rating.
Individually, Leichty achieved a gold rating, the Rinners both secured silver, and Rugg received a bronze. Their success was a testament to the team’s dedication and the support from their advisers and community.
The WACO FFA victory at the Iowa State Leadership Conference paved the way for Nationals, with the team finishing first in the state out of 135 teams. Beyond poultry evaluation, WACO FFA excelled in multiple other competitions, including Ag Sales and Farm Business Management, earning state and national recognition.
Beyond competition, service remains a core pillar of WACO FFA’s mission. In the fall, members prepared and delivered lunches to truck drivers and farmers in the field, recognizing the dedication of those who keep agriculture running. Such initiatives reinforce the chapter’s commitment to the broader agricultural community.
WACO FFA also had the honor of hosting Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, who visited the chapter to discuss the future of agricultural education and industry needs. His visit underscored the importance of programs like WACO FFA in preparing students for careers in agriculture. The event provided members with an opportunity to engage with state leadership, ask questions, and showcase their achievements firsthand.
Looking ahead, the construction of the Agricultural Science Center marks a transformative moment for the chapter. The center, backed by Eichelberger Farms and other supporters, will provide cutting-edge facilities for students to gain hands-on experience in agriculture. The facility is expected to elevate WACO FFA’s ability to prepare students for careers in the industry, bridging education with real-world applications.
As WACO FFA celebrates National FFA Week, members take pride in their accomplishments and look forward to the future. With national recognition, strong leadership, and the promise of expanded resources, the chapter is proving that the future of agriculture is already thriving in Wayland.
