MT. PLEASANT — Henry County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jonathan Shumaker, 23 of Wayland, for Possession of Controlled Substance, Meth, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia after a unique traffic stop.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the courts, early Monday morning at approximately 5:49 a.m. Henry County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a running vehicle parked in the middle of the road with someone asleep in the driver’s seat.
Deputy Brent Roth states that he responded to the report on 105th Street to find a Black GMC Sonoma truck in the middle of the roadway with its lights on.
“I activated my emergency lights and approached the driver side of the vehicle,” Roth details in his affidavit submitted to Iowa Courts. “The defendant was in the driver’s seat asleep with a glass smoking apparatus in his lap. I knocked on the window and the defendant jumped up and exited the vehicle yelling and waving his hands.”
According to Roth, when asked about the glass pipe Shumaker stated it was “something I shouldn’t have.”
Roth conducted a field sobriety test of Shumaker and then placed him under arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to court documents, following a search of the vehicle additional drug related items were found including a small plastic bag under the driver’s sear which field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
In addition to drug related charges, Shumaker received a traffic ticket for stopping on a traveled part of an unpaved highway.
Shumaker was released on is own recognizance and the court scheduled Shumaker’s preliminary hearing for Nov. 6 at 9 a.m.
