MT. PLEASANT — Just in time for winter care preparations, Mt. Pleasant is home to a new auto works shop, though not a new company.
Whaley Auto Works hosted a grand opening celebration this month on Nov. 17 to celebrate their new shop located at 915 W. Washington Street where the old Iris Restaurant sat at the beginning of the year.
While Whaley Auto Works, owned by Vegas Whaley, has been family-owned and -operated since 1989, they only recently began the journey of making their new shop on Washington Street.
When Vegas Whaley first bought the location in July 2022, the community expressed interest in what would come next.
With determination and favorable weather, Whaley was happy to find that his hope to have the business up and ready to go between mid-summer and late fall came to fruition.
At end of September and beginning of October, Whaley began to excitedly post updates of the work on the new space to social media.
He proudly posted pictures of the new Whaley Auto Works sign, a freshly painted parking lot, and new office area as they geared up to celebrate this milestone.
Partnering with the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, Whaley Auto welcomed customers, family, friends, and the whole community to their new space to celebrate with cake and cookies.
Armed with a new shop area, new office area, and the excitement of seeing the project completed, Vegas Whaley and his crew will happily offer a variety of car care to the Mt. Pleasant community just in time to prepare for winter.
“We’ll run a full diagnostic on your vehicle to identify and resolve issues quickly,” the Whaley Auto Works website says. “If you don’t have time to bring your car to the shop, that doesn’t mean you don’ have to forego service-we can pick up your car and drop it off once we complete repairs.”
Whaley Auto Works runs two diagnostic centers every day and welcome walk-ins to check on their vehicles.
Their diagnostic services include checking lights on the dash, listening for odd noises or road rattles, and measuring exhaust and emissions.
“We also provide a variety of basic tuneup services and can deal with issues causing you to have a rough or bumpy ride,” their website boasts. “If your check engine light ever comes on, bring your vehicle to our team.”
Services specifically outlined on the Whaley Auto Works website include brake repairs, tire rotation services, and oil change services.
Each of these services will play a crucial role in staying safe on the roads this winter.
According to Iowa State Extension Office a once over all car functions will make a difference in staying safe in Iowa this winter.
ISU Extension suggests either checking the following items yourself or taking your vehicle to an auto shop like Whaley’s before the cold hits:
Check the battery and ignition system to assure proper starting capability. Clean and identify positive and negative battery terminals.
Check the wipers, defroster, windshield washer fluid, and lights, especially hazard warning lights.
Check the exhaust system, heater, brakes and change the oil to a winter grade oil (SAE 10W/30 weight).
Check tires for adequate tread (no less than 2/32 inch). New all season or "snow tires" are recommended.
Have a windshield scraper and small broom for ice and snow removal.
According to Whaley Auto Works website, they take customers by appointment, but keep slots open for emergency needs.
