The Winfield Historical Society will host their next program April 16 at 2 p.m. in the Winfield Veterans Building.
The Historical Society invites the community and surrounding areas to reminisce with them about Winfield boys state basketball over the years.
According to Winfield Historical Museum President Judy Rawson, former Winfield players in the 90s Klay Edwards and Eric Rawson will speak about their four years winning all places and the state championship in 1995.
“We are honored to have former WMU players Klay and Eric who have a unique perspective as they both played [on Winfield’s team] and went to state several times during their high school careers,” Rawson said. “Both went on to play Division 1 college basketball teams and are now current coaches at WMU and Mt. Pleasant.”
Coach Orrie Rew’s son, Ken Rew, will also share about Winfield’s team attending the state championship in 1949 and 1950 under his father’s leadership.
Additionally, Ken Rew formerly taught and coached at Highland schools.
“We have many great pictures, uniforms and trophies that will be on display for the program,” Rawson said. “Come hear a part of a radio broadcast from the 1949/50 year!”
The program will end with discussion about the changes to the game over the years and where it is headed next.
Following the program, the society will serve refreshment.
This program will be of interest to former, current, and future players, fans, and families.
“We look forward to seeing all those who love basketball for a fun afternoon on Sunday, April 16,” Rawson said.
The Historical Society invites the public to attend this free program and consider making a free will donation which will benefit the renovation efforts for the new home of the Winfield Historical Museum.
“The space is badly needed and once renovated will give us an opportunity to better serve our community,” Rawson said.
