WINFIELD — Winfield residents will soon receive standardized trash carts as the city replaces bag-based collection with 96-gallon carts provided by Wemiga Waste. The change begins in mid-July 2025. Each household will receive one cart at no extra cost, and the monthly trash fee remains $17.
City officials confirmed that all residents must use the cart provided. Additional carts are available for $12 per month. Residents who request extra carts before initial delivery avoid a drop-off fee. Requests made after delivery will include a charge.
Some residents have raised concerns about limited capacity under the new system.
“We almost always had two 40-gallon trash cans picked up each week,” said Katie Sparrow, a Columbus resident whose city transitioned to Wemiga Waste in March. “But with this new 96-gallon one, we don’t fill it up at all.”
Residents with waste that will not fit in their carts encouraged to save the extra for the next week or recycle more if they do not want to pay for an additional cart.
Winfield offers a 64-gallon cart option for residents over age 60, those with disabilities, or individuals who qualify as elderly. Residents who meet the criteria and want the smaller cart must notify City Hall by Thursday, May 15. Calls should be made to 319-257-6661. After this date, residents who change their selection will incur a $25 cart swap fee.
Both cart sizes are on display at City Hall for residents who want to compare before making a decision.
Recycling procedures remain unchanged. Area Recyclers continues to collect sorted curbside materials. Each household must place at least one labeled Area Recyclers bin at the curb. City Hall sells bins for $8.
Residents must sort recyclables by material. Place glass in one bin and tin cans in another. Use a separate container for plastics labeled PETE, HDPE, or PP, and remove lids before disposal. Bundle newspapers, office paper, magazines, envelopes, and catalogs together. Breakdown and flatten corrugated cardboard; exclude cereal boxes, tissue boxes, and drink cartons.
Call Area Recyclers at 800-216-8126 or visit www.wastewrap.org for more information.
