MT. PLEASANT — The Domestic Violence Intervention Program warns victim-survivors of abuse to turn off, silence or otherwise put away any secret phones they may have as a nationwide Wireless Emergency Alert could cause their discovery.
Wednesday, Oct. 4, cellphones will receive a nationwide Wireless Emergency Alert (WAE) which will cause a loud sound to emit from cellular devices.
“Before the WEA comes out, we recommend they turn their ringer off, turn the phone all the way off, and put it in a secure location where it cannot be heard or found to ensure their safety,” DVIP Community Engagement Coordinator Jordan Geriane said.
According to Geriane, victim-survivors might have an extra phone to communicate with their advocates and other local resources as they do their best to keep safe in their current circumstances.
“DVIP gives these spare phones out to communicate with their clients especially if the survivor still is living with the perpetrator,” Geriane explained. “Perpetrators might also have control over the individual’s phone so communicating with anyone via personal phone is potentially dangerous.”
For those that might still need a resource like a phone, Geriane says they can reach out to the 24/7/365 hotline at 1-800-373-1043
