WINFIELD—Following winter break, Winfield Mt. Union third graders split from one class to two thanks to the addition of a new teacher.
Breanna Mettler joined the WMU Elementary staff after her December graduation from Iowa Wesleyan.
She, however, did not walk into this position as a completely new teacher.
According to Mettler, her first teaching position is actually made up of half of the class she student taught for nine weeks prior to graduation.
Her first student teaching assignment was with Morning Sun Elementary.
The addition of Mettler split the 25 student class in two for the second semester of the year.
“We got to split them in half,” she said. “So, I have 12 and the other 3rd grade section has 13.”
WMU Elementary as a whole aims for smaller class sizes for optimal learning experiences.
“It's been amazing,” Christi Klouda said. Klouda is the mom of Mettler’s student Jett Hutchinson.
“I'm super excited to see how [Jett] does for the second semester now that the class size is smaller and there are less distractions,” Klouda said.
Following her first week teaching, Mettler celebrated with donuts for all the third grade students.
“I do have the BEST students,” Mettler said. “It’s always a new adventure with them. I couldn’t have asked for a better week with all the crazy change for them, so I had to stop for donuts on the way to school to celebrate.”
“These awesome students were so flexible, understanding, and willing to adjust to new routines-they definitely earned a special breakfast together!” WMU Elementary wrote on Facebook.
WMU Elementary introduced Mettler via a Smores newsletter at the beginning of January.
According to the newsletter, “A few of her favorite things include coffee, Hobby Lobby, chocolate, Colleen Hoover Books, school supplies, pink & yellow, and Marshalls.”
“She is just as excited as we are to have her working with our students this school year,” the newsletter stated.
