Last Wednesday, New London students grades 6-12 spread out across town with teachers and staff members. Many requests came in from community members. Lawn bags and supplies needed to complete projects wee provided by the residents. Some students brought rakes and shovels. Leaf raking, painting, window washing, picking up rocks, trash and debris were all requested. The weather was very cooperative and it was a great day to be out of doors.
One project needs a special note. The Industrial Technology students removed broken concrete and laid a smooth level area in front of the old Hines building. The former car dealership now holds the Art and Industrial Technology Departments. As soon as the concrete cures, it will hold the bench donated in Memory of Gavin Browning. Appropriately the bench contains the quote “Sparks may fade, but the welds remain.” Gavin is missed by all and when gathering around the bench during breaks, students will remember his plans for the future and use his memory to continue their dedication to the future of the Industrial Technology programs.
To give you an idea of how busy the students were on April 23. Here is the list of places they visited and worked hard to please the residents. Dan Berner, Darlene Gray, Anna Williams, Jim Shull, Sandra Luloff, Lori Polka, Dayle Warth, Erma McCabe, Glenna Voyles, Phyllis Cox, Debra Goodlaxson, Brigette Linkin, Bud & Karen Brown, Carol Linkin’ Deerwood Golf Course, Gaylord, Baseball and softball fields, Matt May Industrial Technology, General cleaning and yard work done around the school and bus barn. The students are even returning to Robin Fisher’s on May 2 to help.
New London students voted some years ago to celebrate Earth Day in their own way. As you know, Earth Day is an annual event designed to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first held on April 22, 1970 and now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally. NL middle and high school students combine the goal of Earth Day with their desire to say “Thank You!” to the people of New London for their daily support of the school. The activities and educational opportunities are enhanced by the community assistance. Driving down the many streets in town with manicured bushes and yards clear of winter debris is a tribute to all.
