Summer is here and it is time to keep watch on the beaches and lakes you might be visiting. Keeping a close watch on this data will help you protect your family. Potentially it might save you money. It is frustrating to plan a weekend only to find the beach closed when you arrive for summer R&R.
The DNR receives samples from lakes and beaches around the state every Friday and reports the test results. The DNR reporting site is https://programs.iowadnr.gov/aquia/Programs/Beaches.
The Iowa Environmental Council reports the results as well. Contact them at iecmail@iaenvironment.org and get on their list.
As of June 2, two beaches in Iowa have an advisory.
Lower Pine Lake Beach – Eldora – Hardin County – E. coli
Prairie Rose Beach – Harlan – Shelby County – E. coli
It is also possible to call DNR beach monitoring hotline 515-725-3434
Another great site, AQuIA, can be frustrating. Get below the map and a complete list of the beaches and recommendations is available.
