On Oct. 8, 2024, the Burge Cemetery Association convened for an important meeting that underscored the community's commitment to honoring and preserving the cemetery's legacy. The board discussed several significant initiatives that will shape the future of Burge Cemetery and enhance its beauty and accessibility.
New Road Construction
In a move that reflects forward-thinking planning, the board approved the construction of a new road in the northeast section of the cemetery, set to commence in the spring of 2025. This project, to be executed by Jim Barton Construction, aims to improve accessibility and start filling in the north section of the cemetery. The development of this new road is a critical step in enhancing the overall accessibility for families and friends visiting their loved ones.
Veterans Memorial Project
After years of dedicated fundraising efforts, the board is excited to announce the approval of a Veterans memorial. This long-awaited project will soon break ground, with the goal of completion set for Veterans Day. The memorial will stand as a tribute to our servicemen and women, honoring their sacrifices and contributions. This initiative represents a significant milestone for the community, reflecting the deep respect and gratitude we hold for our veterans.
Replanting Efforts
In light of the devastating tornado that struck Burge Cemetery on April 16, 2024, the board has taken proactive measures to restore the natural beauty of the grounds. The decision to plant eight new trees will not only replace those lost in the storm but will also symbolize resilience and renewal.
GPS Locating
We are excited to announce that we have officially achieved our goal of 90% GPS location accuracy at Burge Cemetery. As we continue our efforts to restore headstones dating back to the 1800s, we will be adding these newly restored markers to the GPS list on Find a Grave. This enhancement significantly improves accessibility for visitors, allowing them to easily locate their loved ones and friends through the convenience of their smartphones and GPS technology. Our commitment to preserving history and facilitating meaningful connections is stronger than ever.
As we look ahead to the completion of these projects, it is essential to recognize the incredible support we have received over the past six months. The generosity of our community, and all over the nation has been truly humbling. Without your donations and encouragement, the rebuilding and restoration efforts at Burge Cemetery would not be possible. Your contributions have empowered us to undertake these vital improvements, and for that, we are profoundly grateful.
In closing, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have supported us in this journey. Your involvement is invaluable, and we are honored to have you as part of our mission to restore and enhance Burge Cemetery. Together, we can ensure that this sacred space continues to serve as a place of remembrance and reflection for generations to come.
