The New London City Council met in regular session on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024 with all members present. They approved the agenda and the consent agenda, and no one addressed the council in open forum.
They heard three reports:
- Public Works — They are working on the storm sewer that runs under 113 W. Main Street and over to 100 W. Wilson Street. They will continue to excavate the storm sewer to find the reasons it backed up at 113 W. Main Street.
- Public Safety — Council Member Dan Berner attended the E-911 meeting and reported on the drive operator training opportunity coming up. He also told the council that the Henry County Sheriff’s Office is discussing a million dollar addition to their antennae to have direct radio communication with the state.
- Mayor Miller — He and City Clerk Kasi Howard will continue to pursue grant opportunities for replacing S. Pine St. and constructing solar panels at the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). There are two grant opportunities through SEIRPC this fall that would help with S. Pine St. The mayor has also contacted a company that sells/installs solar panels and was given an estimate of $400,000 to equip the WWTP. To be financially feasible, it would have to involve grants and possibly funds from the utility board.
There was no old business. In new business, the council took the following actions:
- Approved Resolution #436 submitting the Street Financial Finance Report for the FY 2024.
- Approved Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024 from 5 to 7 p.m. as the time for Trick-or-treat.
- Approved the engineering services agreement with French Reneker-Associates to reconstruct W. Adams St. from Pine St. to Orchard Lane for an estimated $47,900.
- Approved an additional amount of $6,000 into the joint partial self-funded insurance account to cover employee health insurance claims. This is in conjunction with the $4,000 from the utility trustees.
- The council discussed reviewing city ordinances that need revised. They discussed the pros and cons of doing the revising in a work session or as part of a regular council meeting. They also discussed starting with the beginning of the city code or with the ones that the city has the hardest time enforcing. No decisions were made at this time.
The meeting adjourned at 6:50 p.m. The next regular city council meeting will be Oct. 14, 2024 at 6 p.m. at the city office.
